If your spindle sounds different, makes more noise, or sounds rough, it is telling you something. Spindles rarely fail without warning; the warning is easy to talk yourself out of when the machine is still making parts.

What to listen and look for

  • A change in sound. The change does not have to be loud, only different. A spindle that no longer sounds like it did last month has changed inside.
  • More noise, or roughness. Growling, rumbling, or a rough feel through the machine as the spindle runs.
  • Runout and finish problems at the part. Chatter marks, dimensional drift, or a surface finish the machine used to hold and no longer does.
  • Position and orientation faults. Lost spindle orientation, tool changer misbehavior, or feedback alarms, which are not always electrical. In one documented MZI investigation, a “sensor problem” with nothing audible and nothing on the controller traced to a mechanical defect inside the spindle. What is usually behind it

Many things can happen to a spindle during operation. The most common is contamination of the bearings: usually coolant, cutting oil, or the material being machined or ground finding its way into the bearing area. A broken tool or a crash of any kind can and most likely will damage the bearings, even when the spindle seems to run afterward.

Behind those sit the slower causes: human error, improper maintenance, lubrication problems, and in documented cases the spindle’s own design.

The one rule after a crash: stop. If the spindle is run after a noticeable event such as a crash, the result is more damage to your spindle and a bigger repair than the one you started with.

Can you prevent the next one?

Often, yes, and it starts with treating the spindle like what it is. A machine tool spindle is a high-precision component, yet it routinely gets handled carelessly, run past its design limits, or kept running after something has clearly changed. Ed Zitney’s published failure-cause list (contaminants, human error, improper maintenance, lubrication issues, poor spindle design) reads as a prevention checklist when you invert it: keep coolant, cutting oil, and machined material out of the bearings; stop after any crash or tool break; maintain and lubricate to the machine builder’s schedule; run within the spindle’s rated speed, load, and duty cycle.

Two more habits close the loop. Second, insist on knowing the root cause as well as the parts list: failure analysis is built into every MZI disassembly, documented against your serial number and communicated back to you with what would prevent a repeat.
