Rebuild it or replace it is the question every shop with a down spindle eventually asks, and it deserves a better answer than a hunch. The honest answer is that it depends on numbers you do not have yet: what actually failed, what the rework costs, and what a replacement really costs once lead time and freight are in the math. Start with the number nobody quotes you: zero
Until a rebuild has been approved with your purchase order, there is no charge for receiving your spindle, tearing it down, analyzing the failure, inspecting and measuring every part, and preparing a line-item quotation. Rare cases of a complex spindle carry a minimum charge, noted to you before any work starts. That policy exists precisely for this decision: it means rebuild versus replace gets decided with a real quote in one hand and a real replacement price in the other, not with estimates of either.
What a replacement really costs
A replacement price is never just the sticker. It is the sticker plus freight plus the lead time your machine spends down waiting for it, and on imported spindles all three can be substantial. In one documented MZI investigation, an aerospace manufacturer facing repeated spindle orientation faults priced the alternative: a new spindle at $10,000 plus about $1,000 in air freight from Taiwan. The sharper problem was that the failure traced to a design defect in that spindle model, so a new unit carried the same defect and might not have fixed anything. What a rebuild gets you
A complete rebuild takes the spindle down to individual parts, replaces bearings, seals, and any worn components, corrects what the failure analysis found, and finishes with a run, test, and balance before it ships back. A rebuild is also the natural moment for improvements: the engineered upgrades service exists because the best time to fix a design weakness is while the spindle is already apart.
When replacement makes sense
Sometimes the quote itself says replace, and we will tell you when it does. And sometimes the spindle is obsolete, unsupported, or was the wrong design for the job from the start.
