If it sounds different, makes more noise, or sounds rough, something has changed inside it, and the decision you make next determines whether you are down for days or for weeks.
The three paths
Repair addresses a specific fault: a drawbar that no longer holds, a failed encoder, a damaged tool interface. A complete rebuild takes the spindle down to individual parts, inspects and measures everything, replaces bearings, seals, and any worn components, then reassembles, tests, and balances the unit. Replacement means buying a new spindle from the machine’s OEM or a spindle builder.
Shops often assume replacement is the safe choice. It usually is not the cheap one, and it is not always the fix. In one investigation MZI documented, a new replacement spindle was quoted at $10,000 plus roughly $1,000 in air freight from overseas, and it would not have solved the problem, because the failure came from the spindle’s own design. What causes a spindle to fail
Many things can happen to a spindle during operation. The most common cause is contamination of the bearings: usually coolant, cutting oil, or the material being machined or ground. A broken tool or a crash of any kind can and most likely will damage the bearings.
Beyond contamination and crashes, spindles fail from human error, improper maintenance, lubrication problems, and in some cases the spindle’s own design. The failure symptoms guide covers what each of these sounds and feels like at the machine.
How the decision gets made
You do not have to make this call blind, and you should not pay someone to help you make it. At MZI the sequence is:
- Call first. You will talk to a spindle expert, and with a little information supplied to us we can diagnose the problem and determine your best action. Some problems do not require sending the spindle anywhere.
- Ship it in for disassembly and inspection. The spindle is disassembled, every part is examined, cleaned, and measured, and the failure is analyzed: what caused it, and what prevents it from happening again. The rebuild process guide walks through every step.
- You get a detailed quotation. Every replacement part is priced: bearings, seals, encoders, proximity sensors, and anything else that needs it.
- You decide. Until a rebuild has been approved with your purchase order, there is no charge for any of the work above. (In rare cases of a complex spindle a minimum charge applies, and it is noted to you before any work starts.)
That structure changes the repair-or-replace question: you choose with a torn-down spindle, a documented root cause, and a line-item quote in front of you.
When each path is right
Rebuild is the answer for most bearing-related failures, contamination damage, and crash damage: the spindle body and shaft are usually sound, and a rebuild restores the unit to specification. A rebuild is also the moment to correct a design weakness, because the spindle is already apart; MZI engineers and manufactures replacement parts rather than only fitting them.
Repair fits isolated faults found during inspection (a drawbar rebuild, an encoder or proximity switch replacement) where the bearings and precision surfaces check out.

Preventing the next failure
A machine tool spindle is a high-precision component, and much of what kills spindles is how they get treated: handled carelessly, run past design limits, or kept running after something has clearly gone wrong. - Keep contamination out. Coolant, cutting oil, and machined material in the bearings are the most common killers we see.
- Stop after any crash or tool break. The single cheapest habit on this list.
- Maintain and lubricate on schedule, to the machine builder’s specification, not to convenience.
- Run within the spindle’s design limits: speed, load, and duty cycle.

When the spindle is already apart, correcting a weakness costs a fraction of what it costs later. What does it cost to find out what is wrong?

Should I keep running a spindle after a crash?
No. Running a spindle after a noticeable event such as a crash will result in more damage. Stop, and call to talk through what happened.
