Every spindle at MZI follows the same published sequence, in the order our shop performs it: seventeen steps from the day it arrives to the day it ships back.

Arrival and tracking

  1. Your spindle is received at our shop.
  2. You receive notice that we have it. No wondering whether the freight arrived.
  3. It is entered into our system and tracked against its serial number throughout the entire process.

Disassembly and failure analysis

  1. The spindle is disassembled in the order received, typically within two to three days for a standard rebuild. If you need rush service, the spindle is disassembled immediately on receipt. Disassembly is photo-documented and logged to your spindle’s serial number. This is also where failure analysis happens: determining what caused the spindle to fail and what can be done to prevent it recurring. We document all of it and communicate it back to you: clear communication of what we found and ways to prevent it from happening again. That analysis is its own discipline, covered in the failure analysis guide.
  2. Every part is examined visually, cleaned, and polished. Polishing gives us the opportunity to see any damage to the part. All parts are solvent-washed and dried with clean compressed air, with no rags or towels, because lint is bad news when the parts go to assembly.

The inspection room

  1. Parts move into the clean inspection room, where the shaft, housing, tool interface, drawbar, springs, and electrical components are each measured and tested. The full checklist, from bearing journal sizes to drawbar pull force to motor winding tests, is published in Inside the Inspection Room.

Quotation: before any money changes hands

  1. After full inspection, the quotation is prepared.
  2. Every replacement part is priced: bearings, O-rings, seals, encoders, proximity sensors, and anything else needing replacement.
  3. The quote is sent to you.
  4. If parts need rework, that work proceeds on receipt of your purchase order.
  5. Until a rebuild has been approved with a PO, there is no charge for all the work above. In rare cases of a complex spindle a minimum charge applies, noted to you before any work is started.

The rebuild

  1. After PO approval, reworked parts are processed and replacement parts are ordered.
  2. When rework is complete and all bearings, seals, and other parts are received, assembly begins.
  3. The spindle is assembled.
  4. Run, test, and balance. The rebuilt spindle is run, tested, and dynamically balanced before it goes anywhere.

The trip home

  1. Prep for shipment, painted if required.
  2. Packaged carefully with rust inhibitors added, and shipped back by your preferred method. Before it goes back into service, run the start-up procedure: every spindle is run off at our shop before shipment and must be run off again at yours. The procedure is in Start-Up Procedures (PDF).

Why the order matters

Notice where the money enters: step 10. Everything before it (receiving, disassembly, failure analysis, cleaning, the full inspection, the line-item quote) happens before you commit anything. The order is the point: you decide about a rebuild after the spindle is apart and understood, not before.

Frequently asked questions

What does the inspection cost?

Disassembly, clean and inspect, failure analysis, and the quote are free until a purchase order approves the rebuild. A complex spindle may carry a minimum charge, noted to you before any work starts.

What warranty comes with a rebuild?

One year from the delivery of your rebuilt spindle.

Talk to a Spindle Expert

Start with a phone call

Ed Zitney, President, MZI Precision Edward Zitney President (714) 475-4016 He has spent more than 44 years in spindle rebuilding and remanufacturing. He learned the trade over more than two decades at Precision Balancing & Analyzing, the shop long regarded in the industry as the standard for spindle work, later oversaw SKF Machine Tool Services, held service leadership roles at Setco, and wrote a published column on spindle remanufacturing for Fabricating & Metalworking.
Marco Guerrero, Partner, MZI Precision Marco Guerrero Partner (949) 374-0060 He came up on the shop side of this industry. He started with his hands, welding and fabricating for the racing industry, then spent fifteen years as general manager growing a machining job shop, the same kind of shop that sends MZI spindles today. He has sold CNC machines too, so he knows what new equipment costs and when a rebuild is the smarter call. Today he and Ed are partners in MZI Precision, and his standard is simple: every customer feels informed and supported from the first call to the day the spindle ships back.

Call (714) 379-6505 and describe what changed. With a little information about your spindle we can diagnose the problem and determine your best action.

What to expect on the call:

  • You talk directly with a spindle expert.
  • Some problems can be diagnosed over the phone, and a few do not require removing the spindle at all.
  • If your spindle should come in: disassembly, inspection, failure analysis, and a line-item quote, at no charge until your purchase order approves the rebuild.
