Our process is easy. MZI takes in spindles from shops across the country, and getting yours to Huntington Beach takes four things: a phone call, a form, the right items in the box, and a shipping label. Here is each one.
Step 1: Call before you ship
Please call us at any time at (714) 379-6505. You will talk to a spindle expert, and with a little information supplied to us we can diagnose the problem and then determine your best action. Some problems do not require shipping a spindle at all, and if yours does, the call means we know it is coming.
Step 2: Fill out the RFR form
Once it is determined that your spindle needs repair or rebuild, supply your information by filling out the Rebuild Request Form (PDF) or the online request for repair. Scan and send it, or print it and send it with the spindle.
Step 3: What to include in the box
For a milling spindle, include:
- Your tool holder with retention knob
- Your drawbar
These let us test the tool interface, drawbar pull force, and clamping exactly as your machine runs them. If you are sending a lathe or grinding spindle, these items are not needed.
Include the completed RFR form (or note that you sent it ahead), and pack the spindle to survive freight: supported, immobilized, and protected at the nose and any protruding components.
Step 4: Where to ship

What happens when it arrives
- You get a receipt notice. The day your spindle reaches our shop, you hear from us.
- It is entered into our system and tracked against its serial number through every stage that follows.
- Disassembly proceeds in the order received, typically within two to three days for a standard rebuild. If you need rush service, the spindle is disassembled immediately on receipt. Disassembly is photo-documented and logged to your spindle’s serial number, and failure analysis happens here: what caused the spindle to fail, and what can be done to prevent it recurring. All of it is documented and communicated back to you.
- Inspection and quotation follow. Every part is cleaned, examined, and measured in the inspection room, and you receive a line-item quote. The rebuild process guide covers every step from here to the day it ships back.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to send my tool holder and drawbar?
For a milling spindle, yes: include your tool holder with retention knob and your drawbar. For a lathe or grinding spindle, these items are not needed.
What form do I send with my spindle?
The Rebuild Request Form. Scan and send it ahead, or print it and put it in the box with the spindle. The online request for repair form works as well.
How will I know my spindle arrived safely?
You receive notice the day we receive it, and from that point the spindle is tracked in our system against its serial number, with disassembly photo-documented.

He has spent more than 44 years in spindle rebuilding and remanufacturing. He came up on the shop side of this industry. He started with his hands, welding and fabricating for the racing industry, then spent fifteen years as general manager growing a machining job shop, the same kind of shop that sends MZI spindles today. He has sold CNC machines too, so he knows what new equipment costs and when a rebuild is the smarter call. Today he and Ed are partners in MZI Precision, and his standard is simple: every customer feels informed and supported from the first call to the day the spindle ships back.
Call (714) 379-6505 and describe what changed. With a little information about your spindle we can diagnose the problem and determine your best action.
What to expect on the call:
- You talk directly with a spindle expert.
- Some problems can be diagnosed over the phone, and a few do not require removing the spindle at all.
- If your spindle should come in: disassembly, inspection, failure analysis, and a line-item quote, at no charge until your purchase order approves the rebuild.
