Before a quotation is written, every part of your spindle passes through MZI’s clean inspection room. This page is the checklist, published as we run it, because a list of specific measurements says more than any adjective could.

Before inspection: how parts get there

Every part is first examined visually, then cleaned and polished; polishing reveals minute damage that cleaning alone hides. Even the nuts are removed, polished, and tested for fit. Parts are solvent-washed and dried with clean compressed air. No rags or towels touch them: lint is bad news when parts go to assembly.

The mechanical checks

  • Bearing journal size on the shaft, measured rather than assumed.
  • Shaft bearing shoulders checked true and perpendicular to the seat.
  • Housing bearing bore size.
  • Tool nose interface (CAT, ISO, HSK, JARNO, or lathe nose), checked for size, gage line, and runout.
  • Runout of the shaft bearing journals. Runout is checked with dial indicators reading to fifty millionths of an inch (0.00005″).
  • Runout of the shaft drawbar I.D.
  • Housing bore alignment and shoulder squareness.
  • Spacers between bearings, checked for parallelism and flatness.
  • Drawbar pull force.
  • Disc springs, checked for wear or breakage.

The electrical checks

  • Encoder testing.
  • Proximity switch testing: sensor, settings, gap, and pickup.
  • Motor testing on integral-motor spindles.

The electrical checks matter because faults cross categories: a “sensor problem” can be mechanical and a “bearing noise” can be electrical. One documented MZI investigation began with a proximity switch that tested perfectly, which forced the search to the mechanical root cause. That story is in the failure analysis guide.

What happens with the results

The measurements become the quotation: every part needing replacement (bearings, O-rings, seals, encoders, proximity sensors) is priced line by line, and anything needing rework is identified.
