Speed is a multiplier. An imbalance too small to notice at low rpm becomes vibration at high rpm, and vibration becomes finish problems, shortened bearing life, and a spindle that never feels right no matter what else gets fixed. That is why balance is not an option on our bench. It is a step.

Run, test, and balance: the step every rebuild gets

Every spindle MZI rebuilds is run, tested, and dynamically balanced before it ships. It is step fifteen of the seventeen-step sequence in the rebuild process guide, and it comes after assembly for a reason: balance is a property of the assembled rotating system, and it is proven on the assembled unit, not assumed from the parts. Dynamic balancing is also a standing MZI service in its own right, covered on the balancing page, for spindles and rotating assemblies that need balance work without a full rebuild.

The proof continues after balancing. We run off each spindle prior to shipment, and the start-up procedure that ships with it calls for the spindle to be run off again by the customer before it goes back into operation. Both documents live in the Forms and Documents section of the hub.

What high speed changes

The higher the operating speed, the more the design leans motorized. As Ed Zitney has written in his published work on spindle design, the higher-speed end of the spectrum is dominated by motorized spindles running on high-frequency drives, often water-cooled, with the motor built into the cartridge so no power is lost through a belt, gear, or coupling. That integration is exactly what makes a high-speed rebuild a whole-unit job: motor winding testing, encoder testing, and proximity switch testing join the mechanical inspection, and the spindle types guide explains how each design shapes the work.

Precision underneath the speed

None of it matters if the geometry is off. The inspection behind every rebuild measures shaft bearing journals and the drawbar bore for runout with indicators reading to fifty millionths of an inch, and checks housing bores for size, alignment, and shoulder squareness, because balance on top of bad geometry is polish on a problem. Findings are documented to your spindle’s serial number and come back to you with the quotation, at no charge until your purchase order approves the rebuild.
