The answer to “what does spindle repair cost” starts somewhere unusual: at MZI, finding out costs nothing. Disassembly, clean and inspect, failure analysis, and a line-item quotation all happen before you commit a dollar. This page puts real numbers next to that policy.
What a standard rebuild includes
A price is meaningless without a definition, so here is the one these numbers describe. A standard rebuild is disassembly, clean, inspection, bearings, seals and O-rings, then assembly, run and balance. Every spindle that comes through the shop gets that sequence. Anything beyond it is rework, and rework is quoted as its own line.
What a standard rebuild costs
On a typical CAT 40 milling spindle, belt driven or gear driven, a standard rebuild runs $7,500 to $8,000. Integral motor spindles run higher, because the motor, its windings, and its feedback devices are part of the unit being rebuilt.
What moves that number is what inspection finds, and you see every line of it before you approve anything.
When heavy rework changes the number
Some spindles need more than the standard sequence. Chrome plating and grinding a taper, a bearing journal, or a housing bore, or rebuilding the drawbar, all add machining and process time. On that same CAT 40 spindle, heavy rework of this kind can bring the total to $12,000 to $13,000.
None of it arrives as a surprise. Rework appears as its own line on the quotation, before you decide.
Rebuild or replace, in percentages
Set against the price of a new spindle, a standard rebuild runs around 40 percent. Heavy rework pushes toward 65 to 70 percent. At the top of that range the arithmetic gets closer, and two facts still tip most decisions:
- For older machines, an OEM replacement is often not available at any price. A rebuild is not the cheaper option, it is the only option.
- A spindle can be rebuilt again and again. A new spindle is a one-time purchase; a rebuildable spindle is an asset you keep returning to service.
No charge until you approve the rebuild
Until a rebuild has been approved with your purchase order, there is no charge for receiving your spindle, disassembling it, cleaning and inspecting it, analyzing the failure, and preparing the quotation. A complex spindle may carry a minimum charge, and it is disclosed to you before any work starts.
Customers have said this publicly. Morgan Stipp of Embee Processing, interviewed in Industrial Equipment News, put it this way: “They will diagnose the spindle at no cost and send me a detailed quote, which has been down to the penny on everything. I have never had a surprise charge.”
The warranty
Every rebuild carries a warranty of one year from the delivery of your rebuilt spindle.
What drives the price of a rebuild
Two spindles from the same machine can carry very different rebuild costs. The quote you receive is built from what inspection finds:
- Bearings are the largest and most common replacement item, and the reason contamination and crashes get expensive.
- Seals and O-rings are replaced as a matter of course during a rebuild.
- Encoders and proximity sensors are replaced when testing shows a fault, not by default.
- Rework covers machining or repairing damaged parts. MZI manufactures replacement parts as well as fitting them, which keeps options open when a component is no longer available.
- Size and complexity count too: a large or high-speed unit carries more work than a small one.
Every one of those appears as a line on your quotation before you decide anything.
The cost that never appears on the quote: downtime
The repair invoice is usually the smallest number in a spindle failure. While the spindle is out, the machine earns nothing, the work scheduled on it either waits or gets re-routed, and the operator’s time goes somewhere less productive. A spindle that is failing but still running has a cost too: rising runout and roughness show up as scrap, rework, and finish problems long before the spindle finally stops. Ed Zitney has written on the full cost of spindle ownership since his trade-magazine column in the early 2010s, and the argument has not changed: count the downtime and the scrap along with the repair bill, and the economics of acting early become obvious.
That is also the practical argument for the free-inspection structure: the fastest route back to production starts with knowing what is wrong, and at MZI that knowledge costs nothing. Whoever you send your spindle to, these five questions will tell you what the bill is going to look like:
- Is there a charge for disassembly, inspection, and the quote, and if so, how much?
- Is the quotation line-item, so every bearing, seal, encoder, and sensor is visible before approval?
- What happens, and what do I owe, if I decline the quote?
- Does the evaluation include failure analysis, so I learn why it failed as well as what was replaced?
- What is included in “rebuilt”: is the spindle run, tested, and balanced before it ships back?

What happens if you decline the quote
Then no purchase order was issued, and the evaluation work carries no charge, per the policy above. You keep the diagnosis either way: MZI documents what caused the failure and communicates it back to you, including what would prevent it from recurring.
Rebuild vs. replacement: count the whole bill
A new spindle’s sticker is only part of its cost. Add freight, often air freight from overseas, and the lead time your machine spends idle waiting for it. At GAMMA Aerospace a replacement spindle was quoted at $10,000 plus roughly $1,000 in air freight, and buying it would not have fixed the machine: the failure traced to the spindle’s own design, and a new unit carried the same design.
