A turning spindle usually announces its problems on the part before it announces them anywhere else. Finish gets rougher, size starts to wander, and work that held tolerance last month will not hold it now. By the time the spindle itself sounds different, the bearings have been telling the story for a while.
What the inspection checks on a turning spindle
The spindle nose is where a lathe does its work, so it gets checked as carefully as any milling taper. Our clean-room inspection checks the nose interface for size, gage line, and runout, the same discipline applied to CAT, ISO, HSK, and JARNO interfaces on milling spindles. Behind the nose, shaft bearing journals are measured and checked for runout with indicators reading to fifty millionths of an inch, housing bores are checked for size, alignment, and shoulder squareness, and every spacer, seal surface, and fit is measured before a quotation is written. Why turning spindles fail
The causes are the same ones behind most spindle failures: contamination of the bearings by coolant, cutting oil, or the material being machined; a broken tool; or a crash. Turning adds its own flavor, since chips and coolant live close to the spindle nose all day. And the standing rule applies here too: after a crash or any noticeable event, stop. One packing detail specific to turning work: a lathe spindle shipment does not need to include a tool holder or drawbar.
