Milling spindles live the hardest life on the floor. They take interrupted cuts, tool changes by the thousand, and every crash the machine ever has. Vertical or horizontal, belt-driven or motorized, when a mill spindle starts to slip, the checks that matter are the same.

The checks that matter on a mill spindle

The tool interface comes first. CAT, ISO, HSK, or JARNO, the taper is checked for size, gage line, and runout, because a worn interface will undo good bearings one tool change at a time. Behind it, drawbar pull force is measured, not assumed, and the disc springs that generate it are checked for wear and breakage. Drawbar work is a service line of its own at MZI, covered on the drawbar rebuild page, and it is part of every milling spindle inspection because a tired drawbar mimics half the symptoms of tired bearings.

The rest of the inspection is the same discipline every spindle gets in our clean room: journal and bore sizes, runout measured with indicators reading to fifty millionths of an inch, alignment and shoulder squareness, spacer parallelism, and encoder, proximity switch, and motor winding testing where the spindle carries them. When a mill spindle acts up

Noise, roughness, and runout at the part are the classic signs, and the failure symptoms guide covers them, including the one rule that saves shops real money: after a crash, stop. Running a spindle after a noticeable event will result in more damage.

Some milling spindle problems are sneakier. Lost orientation and tool changer faults can look electrical when they are mechanical: in one MZI investigation, spindles kept losing orientation with nothing audible and nothing on the controller, the sensors all tested good, and the real cause was a coupling that its compression rings could not hold fully in place.
